The short answer: no
Driving on a flat tyre is unsafe, and even a short distance usually turns a tyre that could have been repaired into one that has to be replaced.
Why you shouldn't drive on it
- You can lose control. A flat tyre has very little grip, and the car pulls to one side, especially at speed or in the wet.
- It destroys the tyre. The sidewalls fold and rub together inside, shredding the inner lining. Once that happens, the tyre can't be safely repaired.
- It can damage the wheel. Driving on the rim can bend or crack an alloy wheel, and can harm the brakes and suspension.
What to do instead
- Stop somewhere safe as soon as you can and switch on your hazard lights.
- On a motorway or busy road, get everyone out on the side away from traffic and wait behind the barrier. Call 999 if you're in danger.
- Don't drive on to find a garage. Leave the car where it is.
- Call or WhatsApp us on 0330 043 6598. We're fully mobile, so we come to you, check the tyre and repair or replace it where you are.
Can a flat tyre be repaired?
Sometimes. A small hole from a nail or screw in the central part of the tread can often be repaired to British Standard BS AU 159, but only if the tyre hasn't been driven on while flat. That's why it helps to stop early. We take the tyre off the wheel and check the inside before deciding. See mobile puncture repair.
What about run-flat tyres?
Run-flat tyres can carry the car a limited distance after losing pressure, usually at reduced speed. The exact distance and speed depend on the tyre and the car, so check your handbook. Get to a safe place and have the tyre checked soon after. A run-flat that has been driven on while flat often can't be repaired.
What about my spare wheel?
If you have a spare and you're somewhere safe, you can fit it. Many cars only carry a thin space-saver spare with a speed limit, so only use it to get to safety. Many modern cars have no spare at all, just a repair kit that can't fix sidewall damage or large holes. If you're not sure, or the spot isn't safe, call us instead.
